This is what happens when you become famous and don't wanna join the elite's rape and murder club.
Didn't know what I needed right now was a psychedelic 70s animated sex comedy about Cleopatra. The story is pretty good, you're never bored and every minute something wild is introduced. The real star of this movie tho is the animation. It's really creative the way they blend old anime, UPA animation, comic books and cartoons with various modernist art. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of art deco influence in this. The sex scenes are also really weird, they try a lot of different styles, one time is more minimalistic with only lines and another time it's a full blown watercolor movement. I always love movies about real events that care more about spectacle and less about historical realism. Caesar is a weird green guy in this movie. There are sci-fi elements in this. Truly a wacky movie.
I love punk movies and Richard Kern is the best punk directors of them all. Sleazy but classy, perverted but dreamy, bold and crass and full of noisy industrial music. What more do you want? You can see his influence on a lot of both mainstream and not american directors from the 90s onward. At the end it becomes clear that drugs took a tool on him and he was more interested in photography that movies, and some of his latest movies are pretty bonkers, but there are still some gems in there.
Compared to other biopics, this is less about the story of a man and more a psychosexual analysis of a fucked up man, which means it's better than most biopics. Helps that this looks incredibly stylish. Was never a fan of Mishima's writing style but he was a fascinating man, even if not for the right reasons, and this movie perfectly illustrates his appeal for me. I wanna be the leftist Yukio Mishima.
I get why a lot of people find this boring, or even dislike it, but to be honest I enjoyed it. Sure, in terms of movies where nothing magical happens Ghibli made a lot better, and the story moves too fast, a bit more time for characterization would have been better, but I don't really care that much. I like this. First of all the art is amazing, the backgrounds, the character designs, everything is really pleasant to look at. Probably the Ghibli movie closer to my aesthetic preferences. Say what you want about this movie but you can't deny that the art is top notch. But it's also a really chill and pleasant movie, I hate to be an "it's about the vibes" girl but yeah that's what this movie is for me. It feels less like a movie and more about when you were in high school and hung around other high schoolers with all their stories to tell and unpleasant stuff about them. Doesn't help that I have a soft spot about japanese slice of life stuff. But honestly if you like any american indie "hangout" movie with teens or young adults you have to like this, or at least not find this horrible. Like, there's not much difference.
Also I have a bone to pick with people saying the girl character is unlikable and it ruined the movie for them. Like yeah, she is unlikable, not going to deny that, but honestly when you're a teen going thru some shit you will end up an unlikable person. Besides it's not like in art every character needs to be lovable or even likeable. Sometimes you just need to write jerks.
I have no idea what Lynch meant by this, if he ever meant something, but it was pretty damn funny. That monkey is cute.
It was the last Godard movie I've never seen so I thought of watching it today. Spent a lot of time trying to search it on the internet just to find out it's hidden on Youtube. I can't pretend like I understood what Godard was going for exactly but this was interesting. A lot of tricks and thoughts that Godard already did the previous decade but in a more compact form. Was a bit disappointed that Godard's final movie is another collage-type essay and not a more narrative movie, or even a fun experiment like "Goodbye to Language" but what can you do about it. The final shot was very haunting, expecially when you take into the context that it was the last thing he ever made before getting assisted suicide.
